The immigration of physicians from other nations to Germany

In 2007, a regular study by the National Association of Statutory Health Insurance Physicians and the German Medical Association on the Development of the German Health Care System (ERK) already described a lack of doctors in the Federal Republic of Germany. The figures published in the summer of 2010 show that this shortage of doctors will increase in the coming years. Due to the increasing life expectancy and higher treatment requirements, a replacement requirement of more than 35,000 physicians in the next five years or more than 70,000 physicians in the next ten years is to be expected.

The immigration of physicians from other nations has been quite high for some years, especially from Austria, Greece and the Eastern European countries. Thus, the number of working Eastern European physicians since 2001 has doubled. The number of Austrian physicians has increased fivefold since 1995. Especially in the new federal states, physicians from abroad are working.
Physicians with degrees from other countries, as well as physicians trained in Germany, require a license to practice (Approbation) or at least a work permit (Berufserlaubnis – the work permit is only valid for a certain period of time and for a specific region/state). In addition, physicians who have completed their training as specialists for a particular area of specialization also require recognition of their foreign continuing medical education.

    hello Dr.Tejas,
    Thanks for such detailed explanation
I was wondering if radiology md degree from India is valid in germany
to the best of my knowledge it is not valid for work in germany
I wanted to know if there is a website where I could check the list of recognised degrees in germany and rest of europe?

    • No post graduation degree from India is directly valid in Germany. They may consider some part of your residency valid, which will be decided only after detailed review of your documents by authority.

Hi Dr.Tejas, I have done mbbs and MS general surgery from Baroda medical college, Gujarat.
Am currently a second year resident in MCh Pediatric surgery at NHL medical college,Ahmedabad.
I’ll be passing out in 2021 and wish to practise in Germany and settle there…
Is the MCh degree recognised over there?

    • No MCH degree or MD degree is not considered directly valid.

They will accept it as your experience, you may have to go through some parts of the post-graduation, so some years, and then you will have to clear the exam to get recognized.
So you will not require to go through all the years of post-graduation, some years may be considered valid.
The big problem is that, you can not know about it beforehand. You will have to apply for approval and only then you will know.
And the biggest problem is that, you can approve your MD / MCh, only after approval of your MBBS or in other word only after getting Approbation as Arzt in Germany.
This means that you will have to go through the same process mentioned on the following link, but chances are almost high that you will get approbation without any Gutachten process.
